Filmfare Awards 2010 Pictures, Nominees and Winners

Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor, who turned 29 Thursday, was given a surprise birthday party by his family and friends.

"I was given a surprise birthday party and I sure was surprised. Even dad and family were in on it. Wow! It's actually my first surprise birthday party," Shahid posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

The actor was wished by a number of celebrities, including Karan Johar and Farah Ali Khan.

He has thanked everyone for their wishes.

"Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the birthday wishes. Love you all," he added.

Shahid's friend and co-star of his last release ‘Chance Pe Dance’, Genelia D'Souza, too attended the party.

And Shahid is working hard on his Michael Jackson act for the Filmfare awards, even if it means rehearsing on his birthday.

Says Shahid: "The Filmfare organisers felt I could do the Michael Jackson tribute. And I took up the challenge.

"We didn't have much time to rehearse, only four days. But I've grown up watching MJ's music videos, am a huge fan, so it wasn't difficult to master the choreography. I will be paying a tribute, not copying MJ. But it is better not to adulterate his steps," he adds.

While other performers at the Filmfare awards Saturday will have their acts recorded, Shahid will perform live.

Says the focussed performer: "Yes, I'll be going live... an eight-minute homage. I love dancing on stage. In India, there's no specific culture for stage performances.

"Out West, there's a huge market for live performances. Their films don't have songs and dances. Their pop stars have a vibrant stage culture. So, stage performances are a huge market in the West," he adds.

Bollywood is one big family, no? But there are actually many families within this huge family, who all specialize in their own fields. Here’s a look at the top five.

5. Bachchan Family: Easily one of the most powerful families in the industry, the Bachchans are known for their glam quotient and acting talent. ‘Paa B’ is yet to be conquered in terms of performances, and Abhishek too, has established himself pretty well. Jaya Bachchan is a well known MP and has been a top actress of her time. And of course, there is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who adds oodles of style to this family.

4. Deol Family: This family from Punjab too, is known for its power in the industry, quite literally too! Dharmendra is an iconic actor, most famous for his ‘blood sucking dialogues’ and son Sunny, for his ear shattering dialogue delivery and ‘dhai kilo ka haath’. Though Bobby couldn’t make it as big, he still holds is own. And then there is Hema Malini, and her daughter, Esha, who is now struggling with her career.

3. Khan Family: Scriptwriter Salim Khan’s family is well known in Bollywood. His second wife is yesteryear ‘dancing queen’ Helen, and his son, is of course, brat Salman. Salman also has two brothers Arbaaz and Sohail. Arbaaz is married to Malaika Arora, whose sister Amrita is also into films. Salim’s daughter Alvira is married to Atul Agnihotri of ‘Krantiveer’ fame.Agnihotri of ‘Krantiveer’ fame.

2. Chopra – Johar Family: Though this family hasn’t produced stars, it controls most of the big budget films in the industry. BR Chopra founded BR Chopra films, now run by his son Ravi. BR’s younger brother Yash is the owner of Yashraj Films, producers of many a blockbusters. His son Aditya has taken over the mantle. The second brother Vinod Chopra, founded Vinod Chopra films, which is now run by his son Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producers of the Munnabhai series. The youngest sibling Hiroo married Yash Johar of Dharma Productions. Yes you’re right! They are related. There you have it! They are the rulers of romantic films.

1. Kapoor family: The ultimate big – daddy of all ‘khaandans’ is the Kapoor family, which all started when Prithviraj Kapoor came over to India. They have been producing stars for over three generations from showman Raj, to his brothers Shashi and Rishi to their sons and daughters now. Kareena is the current queen of Bollywood, and Ranbir is set to become the biggest star in the next few years. They also rule the theatre, with the Prithvi Theatre being a much sought after venue for serious actors. Prithvi is handled by Sanjana Kapoor, who’s the daughter of Shashi Kapoor.

Top Families of Bollywood

It isn’t easy to make people laugh. And certainly not in India, where the audience full paisa vasool, and at the same time, the critics expect a fine cinematic example. It is nigh impossible to pick the best of the lot and make up a list of only five films. Here is what we came up with:

Hera Pheri - Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty, Tabu

5. Hera Pheri: Priyadarshan entered the comedy genre with this rollicking flick. The story is basically revolves around the wrongly attributed telephone number of a rich businessman’s house to that of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte's (Paresh Rawal) garage in the telephone directory and all the hassles and situations that follow and precede the climax. With sub-plots as funny as the main ones, this film is a must watch for all comedy lovers. Check it out for the impeccable comic timing perfected by Rawal and Akshay Kumar (who was a welcome change from his Khiladi series).

Chupke Chupke - Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore

4. Chupke Chupke: This Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic is a delight to watch with family and friends. The story is basically about Prof. Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) who is a botany professor and decides to stage a drama to fool his wife’s (Sharmila Tagore) jijaji, after she praises him to no ends. The hilarious sequences involving Dharmendra as the crazy driver Pyaare Mohan and Om Prakash (Jijaji) are still etched in viewers’ minds. Amitabh Bachchan as another actor in the ‘drama’ also provides genuinely funny moments.

Padosan - Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Saira Banu

3. Padosan: A timeless classic, the story involved is a very simple one. A simpleton (Sunil Dutt) falls in love with his neighbour Bindu (Saira Banu). To impress her by singing, he seeks Guru’s (Kishore Kumar) help. The situations that follow make for some amazing comic scenes. There is also the famous song Ek Chatur Naar, sung by Kishoreda and Manna Dey, which has gained cult status. The film belongs to the sublimely talented Kishore Kumar, both as an actor and a playback singer. The jolly gang with its sharp characters certainly is a treat to watch.

Andaz Apna Apna - Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karishma Kapur

2. Andaaz Apna Apna: Rajkumar Santoshi’s comic caper, which released in the 90’s, set off the careers of two stars (Aamir and Salman). The crazy plot, insane characters and unmatchable performances by the whole cast makes this movie a must for every movie lover. Ask anyone in India the same question which we are answering now and AAA will be a film certainly to be included.

Golmaal - Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt, Bindiya Goswami

1. Gol Maal: Finally down to number one. This film is perhaps one of the most well written films of all time. The story is basically about Ramprasad Sharma (Amol Palekar) who is looking for a job. He manages to get one at Bhavani Shankar’s (Utpal Dutt) company, but Bhavani Shankar has a set of rules and ideals which he expects from the youngsters. Ramprasad overdoes it and rib-tickling situations follow. Utpal Dutt’s act as the suspicious boss and father is one of his best known roles.
